Description of the drug   :

Diltiazem is a medication that prevents calcium from entering the heart cells. This has the effect of decreasing the contractions of the heart and the blood vessels.   As a result, the arteries of the heart open and let a larger amount of blood pass.

Diltiazem also affects the passage of the nervous current to the heart.

Utilities :

This drug can be used in dogs and cats that have supraventricular tachycardia (an increase in heart rate that originates from the atria of the heart). It can also be used in dogs with atrial fibrillation (small, ineffective contractions of the atria of the heart).

In cats, it is used mainly to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart disease in which the walls of the heart are thickened). It can also be used to treat high blood pressure and in combination with other medications to treat newly occurring kidney damage.

Contraindications:  

Unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian, do not use this medication in animals with low blood pressure, certain problems with the passage of nervous current in the heart and pulmonary congestion (accumulation of blood in the lungs). ) or who have already had a heart attack.
